Awaiting Surgery

Ezekiel just was admitted back into Sick Kids Hospital. We came in for our afternoon cardiac appointment and his echocardiogram and his oxygen levels were too low. He will be having open heart surgery this week to put what's called a BT Shunt in. We are not sure what day but it will be this week for sure.

The BT shunt is a palliative procedure. It does not correct the defect, but it helps to resolve symptoms until his is 4-6 months and they start to repair work done on his heart. The shunt creates a detour that allows enough blood to pass through the lungs and pick up more oxygen.

There are a lot of unknowns regarding his recovery time. As it has been explained to us, every cardiac baby is very different and they will present very differently. This means he could be in the hospital for two weeks or he could be in the hospital for six months. It all depends on how he is coming out of surgery. Please pray for the best outcome.
